What is the difference between Coaching and Therapy?

Many people ask us, what is the difference between Coaching and therapy. In general terms, coaching is more goal orientated and recognising and clearing unconscious patterns, self-limiting beliefs, fears and anything else that may be holding you back from reaching a goal.


Therapy is more around recovering or moving through issues that are more mental health based. This is usually done by a qualified health professional such as a psychologist, mental health nurse, psychotherapist or counsellor.


That being said, coaches should be able to help you understand how the past contributes to your present and how it is affecting your future progress. Therapist, on the other hand, focuses more on healing from your past.

NLP is widely used by coaches around the globe. Coaching helps you to be specific about your goal, identify the resources you have and the resources you need to move towards it.


At The International Academy of NLP we love seeing people reach their goals. We have seen many people breakthrough barriers and become so much more confident in how they present themselves and positively move in the direction they want to.


There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. Some people will give up on their goal if they fail and some will see the failure as a lesson. How we look at it and what we think about it decides what direction you take.


Ok, I am keen on booking a coaching session so how does it work?


Your coaching sessions are tailored around what it is you want. However, there is some really important things your coach will need to know to so they can empower you! It is also really important for you to know exactly what it is you want.


This is how it works:


Session one:

Your first coaching session will be where your coach will go through your desired goal and get very specific about what your goal is. This session helps your coach to understand and identify any patterns, blocks or beliefs that may be holding you back. It is gathering important specific information, so you and your coach are crystal clear about your desired goal.


Subsequent sessions:

Every session after your initial session will be aimed at working on a specific area that may be holding you back. Each session will begin creating a Key performance indicator (KPI) on what you want to get out of that session.


Should I have one on one coaching sessions or get a coaching package?


This totally depends on what you want. Some people want to have one or two coaching sessions to start them off and other people want to lock in a package for many different reasons. Coaching packages are often less expensive than having a one on one session ad hoc.
